Southeast Tower Rehabilitation

There were many elements involved in the West Block’s southeast tower rehabilitation, including extensive masonry work, seismic reinforcement, the replacement of the copper roof and work on the chimney.

A) Masonry and Seismic Reinforcement

The core of the work in rehabilitating the southeast tower’s masonry consisted of removing all stones, consolidating the rubble core behind the stones and rebuilding the wall. Stones that were severely damaged were replaced with newly cut stone.

Considering that its masonry walls consist of three separate layers, reinforcing the southeast tower to current seismic codes was a major, but necessary, undertaking. Steel anchors were installed and grout was injected to reinforce and unify the layers.

B) Chimney and Copper Roof

The old copper roofing was removed, the roof structure restored and consolidated. A new copper roofing was installed. The chimney and chimney cap also underwent a major restoration.
