Rehabilitation of the North Towers

Before countless professionals could begin rehabilitating both towers on the West Block’s north side, free-standing steel scaffolding had to be erected and secured. These enclosed platforms offer the workers access to all levels of the masonry and the roof so that they can work year-round in a heated environment, protected from the elements.

The bulk of this rehabilitation project involves extensive masonry work and seismic reinforcement of the structure.

All stones will be inspected and cleaned or, if they are badly damaged, replaced. Steel anchors will be installed and grout injected to reinforce and unify the layers. The decorative ironwork on the towers will also be restored.

Work will also be done on the north towers’ roof structures. The copper roofs themselves will be replaced, while the masonry chimneys and caps will undergo major restoration.
